Johnson County sits in the far northeastern corner of Tennessee, surrounded by rugged mountain scenery and thick forests. Much of the county is covered by Cherokee National Forest, so the landscape is about as wild and beautiful as it gets. The higher elevations bring cooler air and some seriously impressive views.

Mountain City serves as the county seat and, despite its name, has more of a quiet small-town feel. It’s the only incorporated town in the county, making it the main hub for the local community. Life here is peaceful, with plenty of open space and very little of the hustle and bustle you’ll find elsewhere.

Watauga Lake is one of the area’s biggest attractions, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, and enjoying the scenery. The Watauga River and nearby trails add even more options for outdoor adventures. The Appalachian Trail also passes along the southern edge of the county. Johnson County is remote, quiet, and wonderfully peaceful—the kind of place where nature takes center stage.
