Polk County is located in northwestern Georgia and was established in 1851. Named in honor of President James K. Polk, the county has a proud industrial heritage that continues to shape its identity while embracing new opportunities for tourism and outdoor recreation.
Cedartown, the county seat, is home to the famous Big Spring, a natural spring that produces millions of gallons of crystal-clear water each day and serves as one of the community’s most recognizable landmarks. Rockmart, the county’s other principal city, features a revitalized downtown filled with local businesses, restaurants, and historic charm.
For generations, Polk County’s textile mills fueled the local economy, and many of these historic buildings still stand—some continuing their original purpose while others have been transformed into new commercial and community spaces. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the Silver Comet Trail, a popular multi-use path that passes through the county near Rockmart, offering excellent opportunities for walking, running, and cycling.
