Morgan County is right in the heart of west-central Illinois. Jacksonville, the county seat, is home to several colleges and a school for the deaf. Miles of corn and soybean fields stretch toward the horizon.
The county’s history runs deep, with Underground Railroad sites scattered across the landscape. Illinois College, founded in 1829, still stands proudly. Farmers’ markets are also popular during the summer.
The Illinois River forms the northwestern border and provides good opportunities for recreation. Winters can be harsh, with biting winds and heavy snow. But folks here are used to it. They hunker down and wait for spring.
