Bristol Bay Borough is a small region located in southwest Alaska. It is well known for its massive salmon runs, particularly sockeye salmon. Around 900 people live in the borough, mainly in the communities of Naknek, South Naknek, and King Salmon.
Fishing is the main source of employment, with many residents working in canneries or on fishing boats. The landscape consists mostly of tundra and wetlands, with no trees. Summers are short but extremely busy as thousands of seasonal workers arrive for the fishing season.
Bears are common in the area because of the abundant salmon runs. The borough has a rich Native Alaskan history, with Yup’ik and Aleut cultures remaining strong today. Despite its small population, Bristol Bay Borough has an airport that provides connections to Anchorage. The region also faces ongoing debates about mining and protecting its valuable fishing grounds.
