Dickens County is home to the rugged Croton Breaks, a striking landscape of deep canyons and rugged terrain in the Texas Plains, about 60 miles east of Lubbock. The country can be harsh, but its dramatic scenery gives the region a unique beauty.
Ranching has been a way of life here for generations, with wide-open pastures and cattle far outnumbering residents. Dickens, the county seat, is a small community with a strong sense of local pride and plenty of character.
The county is named after J. Dickens, who lost his life at the Battle of the Alamo. Caprock Canyons State Park reaches into the county’s northeastern corner, where visitors can experience rugged landscapes and see free-ranging bison.
