Gove County is located in western Kansas, where wide-open prairie and flat landscapes stretch across a sparsely populated area of about 2,700 residents. Gove City, the county seat, serves as the center of this quiet rural county. Nearby Oakley is home to a large Buffalo Bill statue, a popular photo stop along the Western Vistas Historic Byway.
The county’s most notable natural attraction is Monument Rocks, a remarkable collection of towering chalk formations rising dramatically from the surrounding prairie. Their unusual shapes and geological character make them one of western Kansas’s most distinctive landmarks.
The Fick Fossil Museum showcases fascinating fossils of prehistoric marine creatures discovered in the region, highlighting Kansas’s ancient ocean history. In August, the Gove County Fair brings traditional small-town entertainment and community activities, while fossil hunting tours offer visitors a chance to search for ancient remains, including mosasaur fossils.
