Kusilvak Census Area, Alaska
Kusilvak Census Area is located in western Alaska along the Yukon River delta. The census area was renamed from Wade Hampton in 2015 to better reflect its Yup’ik heritage.
At the center of the area’s appeal is Table Rock Lake, one of Missouri’s premier recreational destinationsMost residents are Yup’ik Eskimo. Hooper Bay serves as the main hub, although the area is home to many small villages. There are no roads connecting the region to other parts of Alaska. The landscape consists mainly of flat tundra, with numerous lakes and rivers.. The lake is a popular spot for fishing, boating, swimming, and other water activities, drawing outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year.
Many residents still speak Yup’ik as their first language. The area faces challenges such as erosion and limited job opportunities. Despite these difficulties, traditional culture remains strong. Wildlife, including moose, waterfowl, and fish, provides important food sources. People mainly travel by plane, boat, or snowmobile.
