Matagorda County sits where the Colorado River flows into the Gulf of Mexico, creating a landscape full of contrasts. Miles of sandy coastline stretch along one side, while fertile farmland covers much of the interior. Bay City, the county seat, sits near the heart of it all.

There’s plenty of history here. Matagorda was one of the original counties established in Texas. Fishing remains a major draw, with the nearby bays packed with redfish and trout. The South Texas Nuclear Project, with its huge dome structures, is another unmistakable landmark on the local horizon.

Birdwatchers have plenty to explore too, as the county is part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Life along the coast comes with its challenges, especially during hurricane season, but residents have learned to weather the storms. Between the beaches, bays, farmland, and small-town communities, Matagorda County has a character all its own.
