Val Verde County sits in southwestern Texas, right along the Mexican border. The Rio Grande forms much of its southwestern boundary, while the semi-arid climate brings hot summers and generally mild winters. It’s rugged country, with wide-open spaces and plenty of desert scenery.
This is a big county, covering more than 3,000 square miles of Texas landscape. Del Rio serves as both the county seat and largest city, and it’s also home to Laughlin Air Force Base. Despite the county’s size, much of the area remains open and undeveloped.
Lake Amistad is the county’s biggest outdoor attraction, offering miles of water for fishing, boating, and recreation.
