Huerfano County, Colorado
Huerfano County is located in southern Colorado, where the eastern plains meet the Rocky Mountains. Walsenburg serves as the county seat and has a long history as a coal mining community.
The Spanish Peaks dominate the skyline and create one of the county’s most distinctive natural landmarks, with their dramatic forms visible from miles away. Much of Huerfano County remains rural, with ranches and open landscapes stretching across the eastern portion.
The county’s name means “orphan” in Spanish and refers to the Huerfano Butte near Gardner.
