Big Lake serves as the county seat, although the name can be a little misleading. The original lake that gave the town its name dried up many years ago, even though a lake is still shown on some maps.
The county was named after John Reagan, who served as postmaster general of the Confederacy. Before oil transformed the area, ranching was a major part of the local economy. Today, petroleum production remains at the center of life in Reagan County.
