Caroline County sits in eastern Virginia, roughly halfway between Richmond and Washington, D.C. It’s mostly rural, but there’s more happening here than the wide-open farmland might suggest.

The county has a pretty unusual place in American history. John Wilkes Booth was captured here after assassinating President Lincoln. Then there’s Fort A.P. Hill, which takes up a large part of the county and has a long military history.

The Rappahannock River forms part of the northern border, making it a great spot for canoeing and other outdoor activities. Locals take pride in their small-town values, where neighbors still wave and look out for each other. There’s plenty of farmland and peaceful countryside, while the bigger cities are still close enough when you need a change of scenery.
