Jones County, Iowa
Jones County is located in eastern Iowa, not far from the Mississippi River. The county was named in honor of George Wallace Jones, one of Iowa’s first U.S. Senators.
Anamosa, the county seat, was once known as “Buffalo Forks” because of its location at the meeting point of Buffalo Creek and the Wapsipinicon River.
The county is home to the fascinating Anamosa State Penitentiary Museum. Visitors can learn about the history of this 150-year-old prison and its long connection to the community.
