Lucas County, Iowa
Lucas County lies in south-central Iowa, about an hour southeast of Des Moines. Chariton, the county seat, was established in 1849 and named after the Chariton River.
The county is named in honor of Robert Lucas, Iowa’s first territorial governor. Stephens State Forest covers a large portion of the county, providing opportunities for hiking and hunting.
Red Haw State Park is a local favorite, especially in spring when the redbuds bloom and the lake becomes a great spot for fishing. Don’t rush through Lucas County, because there’s plenty to see, especially its parks.
